Human characteristics as trust-promoters in socio-technological epistemic systems

Trust is central to our evaluation of epistemic sources. Without trust there is no knowledge. We wouldn’t ask someone on the street for directions if we didn’t believe that he’d tell us the truth – the correct way to the address or the fact that he doesn’t know it; nor would we make the effort of locating information in a book or website if we didn’t believe that we’d find reliable information. Daily life includes countless situations in which we access various sources for information. These sources can be people, written texts (books, newspapers, manuals, etc.) or digital sources such as websites. There are various factors that affect whether we choose to access one epistemic source or another, including availability, epistemic goal, and the amount of effort we wish to invest. We’ll decide according to availability whether to locate an address using a map or to ask a person on the street. We’ll decide according to goal, to confirm an historical fact, whether to ask a friend who we think knows the answer (if the goal is, e.g., to satisfy curiosity) or to look it up in an encyclopedia (if the goal is, e.g., citing the fact in an academic text). There are subjects on which to acquire knowledge we’d likely be willing to expend considerable effort, such as CPR (to acquire this knowledge, we may enroll in a first aid course) – and subjects on which to acquire knowledge we’d be willing to expend only modest effort. If we want the latest gossip on a celebrity, for example, it’s highly likely that we’d make do with digital sources. Whatever epistemic source we choose, the choosing of it probably means that we believe it to be trustworthy.
