From Savonarola by Boneh Tirosh
Florence, Vespucci’s home. Vespucci sits in the middle of a large, dim room next to a chess table. There’s an air of solitude. Enter Vittorio.
| VITTORIO | Good evening. |
| VESPUCCI | (Pleasantly surprised) Good evening, Vittorio. What a surprise. How’s your lovely mother? |
| VITTORIO | (Halfhearted) Thank you, she’s fine. |
| VESPUCCI | Care perhaps to join me in a game of chess, Vittorio? |
| VITTORIO | (Holding back an outburst) No, thank you, Ser Vespucci. I’m a not a fan of chess. I prefer dice. |
| VESPUCCI | (Chats airily, consciously ignoring Vittorio’s mounting anger) Yes, because in dice you see the results right away. Strange: for some reason it’s the young who never seem to have time – while the old, who have little time left, seem to be in no rush at all. You know who told me a nice thing about chess once? Believe it or not – Brother Girolamo… |
| VITTORIO | (Bursts out) Ser Vespucci! |
| VESPUCCI | Yes, Vittorio, speak at last – because as long as you don’t tell me what exactly brings you here at this hour, I’ll continue to pelt you with a lonely old man’s chatter. |
| VITTORIO | (All red-faced) Sir, you sit here playing chess with yourself, while outside the city is suffocating, raped daily by a madman, driven into oblivion – and no one does anything to stop him. |
| VESPUCCI | Vittorio, my dear, you’re a law student. You should know that, though it’s unfortunate, the brother controls Florence because his people won a legal election; and if I sit at home, it’s because I’ve been sent here by our dear Florentines. |
