Hindi is one of the most widely spoken languages of the South Asian subcontinent, and a prominent member of the Indo-Aryan family of languages. Throughout the world, it has been considered a window to India and Indian culture. Although Hindi is not the national language of India, it is often considered so. Hindi is part of a group of languages known as ‘less commonly taught languages’ (LCTL, sometimes called ‘truly less commonly taught languages’) in the United States, where in the recent post-9/11 era it has been identified as a language of critical significance by the Department of Education.
